Update Notes for Ready, Aim, FILE! Rev 2D
MASTER FILES - VERY IMPORTANT
Ready, AIm, FILE! sets up programs by reading Program Manager
files and creating a setup record that uses a master file that we
provide for specific programs (listed below). For programs that are
not recognized you MUST create a master file of your own and
edit the Ready, Aim, FILE! setup record.
Programs you do not need to set up:
MS Word for Windows
WordPerfect for Windows
Ami Pro
Windows Write
Windows Notepad, Cardfile and Calendar
Microsoft Works
Corel Draw
MS Excel
Lotus 123 for Windows
Quattro Pro for Windows
Pagemaker
ACT! for Windows
Approach
Paintbrush
Windows PIF Editor
If you are using a program not in this list, it will initially be set
up as a "Launch Only" program. This means that it will only be started
and files cannot be created or loaded. To change it, create a master
file and then edit the setup record for the given program. Turn off
the launch only button and then list the new master file and file
extension for data files to be created and launched (i.e., .DOC).
"File Info"
The "Open" button has been renamed to "File Info" this button lets
you access the File Record from the File List.
Launching
Double-clicking or pressing ENTER while a file is highlighted in the
File List, will launch the specific file. Previous versions of opened
the File Record with this action. To open a FileRecord instead of a
Launch you must now use the File Info button.
Version Control
The Version Control feature when activated will make a copy of the
a file each time launched and will then track versions of that file
stamping each with "Version" and a series of separate documents.
Time Stamp
A time stamp button has been added to the file list. The button
will either display or hide the date of all files as an extension
of the long name.
Save As / Open Intercept
The Save As intercept button controls whether or not the Save As /
Open intercept is active. When active, File Open and Save As commands
from any given application will be intercepted by RAF! and the
file list will be displayed instead of the standard DOS based file
command dialog box.
Lotus 123 for Windows and Quattro Pro for Windows
There is a problem in using the Save As / Open intercept. You
will have to conduct file operations from RAF! and not the intercept
due to compatibility difficulties. In other words, create, open
and save files using RAF! and not the Save As / Open function from
within your program. A fix for the problem is being prepared but was not
ready at the time of release.
WordPerfect 5.2
If you are using WordPerfect 5.2 you will experience difficulty in using
the Automatic Setup/Build features. The WordPerfect installation program
installs two bad icons that contain illegal characters in the program
description that cannot be processed by Windows during the Ready, Aim,
FILE! Setup DDE conversation. To correct the problem, highlight the Quickfind
icon from the WordPerfect Program group in Program Manager. Select
"Properties" from the File menu. In the "Description" field you will find
a strange looking character. Delete the bad character and press the OK
button to save the corrections. Repeat the process for the WordPerfect
Install icon. The Problem will be fixed.
Borland Products Using BWCC.DLL
Ready, Aim, FILE! uses a streamlined version of this .DLL used by
many Borland products and possibly other products that you may be using.
If you are using a product that requires BWCC.DLL, you should copy
BWCC.DLL from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to the \WINFILE directory
replacing the Ready, Aim, FILE! version. This will not have any effect
on Ready, Aim, FILE! or any other products using BWCC.DLL.
Lotus 123 (DOS Versions)
Ready, Aim, FILE! copies a file called AUTO123.WK1 to the directory
listed as the "Startup Directory" in Lotus 123!. This file is a macro
that allows Lotus files to be loaded directly and is run automatically
each time Lotus is started. The macro uses the following commands:
AUTO123.WK1 (Default)
FILE,IMPORT,TRANSFER,{ESCAPE}{ESCAPE}C:\x$app.out~
FILE,RETRIEVE,{ESCAPE}{ESCAPE}FILENAME~,
If your Lotus "Start up directory" contains no subdirectories the
macro is slightly different using one less ESCAPE stroke used to get
by the subdirectory selection option in the menu:
AUTO123.ALT (Alternate Macro - No subdirectories present in "Start up")
FILE,IMPORT,TRANSFER,{ESCAPE}C:\x$app.out(file containing the new name)~
FILE,RETRIEVE,{ESCAPE}{ESCAPE}FILENAME(file named in C:\x$app.out)~,
Ready, Aim, FILE! checks to see if there are subdirectories present and
exchanges the macros if it senses a configuration other than the default
which is set for subdirectories present. If you want to check what your
Lotus "Start up" directory is, use the following commands from within
Lotus 123:
WORKSHEET,GLOBAL,DEFAULT,DIRECTORY,(TYPE NEW DIR),UPDATE
If you encounter problems try running the LOTUSALT.BAT program located
in the Ready, Aim, FILE! directory. This program manually switches
the macros.
Additional Directory / Copy Program
The Add Dir function has been changed in name only to "Copy App".
The function refers to the process of duplicating existing program
information and using it as a separate and unique program that can be
selected when creating files in Ready, Aim, FILE! In other words you
may duplicate "Word for Windows" as "Contracts", "Letters", "Memos",
etc., and attach unique program information.
Desk
The Desk items, Rolodex, Calendar and Notepad have been linked to
specific files. This means that instead of simply launching the
function when accessing it through Ready, Aim, FILE! it now loads
a specific file, allowing you access to a personal file and you do
not need to load your personal file for the specific Desk item using
the Open command. If you have an existing Desk file for any of the
functions you may use it by changing its name to the name FILE!
looks for when it launches the specific Desk item.
Rolodex = C:\WINFILE\ROLO.CRD
Calendar= C:\WINFILE\APPT.CAL
Notepad = C:\WINFILE\NOTE.TXT
To replace any or all of these with your own files, simply open the
Desk item and open your Desk item file. Use the Save As command and
type in the DOS name indicated for the specific Desk item above.
Once completed, each time you access the Desk item from FILE! it
will load your file.
Virtual Screens
The Virtual Screen features were added after the manual went to press
and therefore is not documented. The Virtual screen features allow
you to create program items and scripts represented by icons in
separate screens just like you would in Program Manager. The virtual
desktops refer to the ability to create multiple desks, groups and
program items. Please refer to the online help for detailed
instructions.
FILE! as a Shell
Do not use RAF! as a shell. If you wish to have FILE! loaded when
you start your computer, edit your WIN.INI file found in the WINDOWS
directory by adding the C:\WINFILE\FILEWIN.EXE execute command as
follows:
1. to run the program on start-up
Run C:\WINFILE\FILEWIN.EXE
2. to load the program and minimize to icon
Load C:\WINFILE\FILEWIN.EXE
File Manager "Run" Command
The File Manager contains a "Run" command which is improperly
defined in the manual. The Run command allows you to run a program
by launching a file with an .EXE, .COM, .BAT or .PIF extension. and
does not duplicate the FILE|RUN command from Program Manager as
described in the documentation.
File Manager "DOS Shell" Command
A new feature is the "DOS Shell" command which allows you to "shell
out" to DOS and to a C:> prompt at which point you may execute any
normal command line operations and/or commands. You can type "EXIT"
at any point to return to Windows at the point where you left.
Save As/Open Intercept
By far the most signicant feature added to RAF! is the intercept
which allows you to access cabinet, folder, and long names from
within a program. It intercepts a program's open or save as command
and diplays a FILE! dialog box with all of the cabinet system
information. You can then select files and save as without dealing
with DOS information only and you do not need to return to RAF! Please
refer to the online help for a detailed description and instructions.
Name ID# Utility
This utility is used as an aid to creating Save As / Open intercept
setups for incompatible programs. Most programs will be immediately
compatible without alteration or modification but for those that
are not, this utility will provide the information necessary to create
a custom setup. It is recommended that you contact Technical Support
before use of this utility at 310-858-3941.
To use the utility, Launch it from Program Manager. Next, launch the
target program and arrange your windows so that you can see the utility
caption. Initiate an Open File command from the target application and
point the mouse at the Open dialog box caption. Record the utiltiy
information (ex., "MSWORKS.EXE AA8C) and then point at the DOS name
field. Record that information and then repeat the same steps for a Save
As command. You should have recorded two sets of information containing
an .EXE or .DLL and an ID #. Use these parameters in the Save As Setup
found in the RAF! Setup function. Refer to the on-line help in the Save
As Setup for more information.
